With its highest number of patents issued, commercial agreements, corporate-sponsored research funding, and licensing revenue receipts in a single period, the Penn Center for Innovation experienced a landmark fiscal year.
Penn Today marks the anniversary of Pennovation Works, the University’s business incubator and laboratory space, with a look at the evolution of the site, its research and commercialization achievements, and a glimpse into the future.
In its second year, Pennovation Works, a strategic blend of offices, labs, and production space that pushes for the advancement of knowledge and economic development, continued to move the needle on activating its space as an innovation destination.
It was a season full of excitement, to kick off an academic year that will, undoubtedly, see even more fulfillment.
Visitors participating in a Jane’s Walk will tour Penn’s technology and innovation hub, and learn about the history of the area’s deep inventive roots.
Since the Pennovation Center’s founding in 2016, one of the many visions of its purpose has been to serve as a stepping stone for Philadelphia startups.
Penn Medicine resident Nikhil Illa is featured as the cofounder of Pocket Scribe, maker of a cloud-based app that assists physicians by using artificial intelligence to transcribe and sort dictated notes. The app won the Best Pitch Award at Pennovation’s annual accelerator pitch day.

Pennovation’s annual accelerator concluded with a pitch day at the end of July. After participating in the six-week accelerator, the nine companies in the 2023 program pitched to a panel of judges and other members of the Pennovation community in hopes of winning funding and other perks.
