London Calling: Olympic Park South Commission Is a PennDesign Success

James Corner Field Operations (JCFO), the New York-based contemporary design practice led by the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design's James Corner, MLA'86, Professor and Chairman of Landscape Architecture, has won the commission to design the new public spaces in London Olympic Park South. This will be one of the first new public spaces and facilities added to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, which will host events following the 2012 Games.
Penn School of Design Receives $2.5 Million for Faculty and Program Support in Fine Arts

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania announced today a $2.5 million gift for faculty and program support in its School of Design from alumni Keith L. Sachs and his wife, Katherine Stein Sachs.  The gift will enable the School to increase the impact of the visual arts across the University and throughout the arts community, as well as encourage collaborative interaction among departments and centers at Penn.

Penn Offering Postdoctoral Fellowships to Promote Academic Diversity

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania is accepting applications for its Academic Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The program will award postdoctoral fellowships to scholars and educators from different backgrounds, races and ethnic groups and from other diverse groups whose life experience, research experience and employment background will contribute significantly to Penn’s academic excellence. The deadline for applications is Aug. 1.

 PHILADELPHIA– The Penn Institute for Urban Research and the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania celebrated Earth Day with the release of The Penn Resolution: Educating Urban Designers for Post-Carbon Cities, an illustrated roadmap to guide 21st century urban design education.  The Penn Resolution contributes to the field's heritage of manifestos.  Each manifesto, in its own era, has transformed urban design practice by offering timely responses to changing social, economic and environmental conditions.
Penn IUR Report on Vacant Land Management Released

PHILADELPHIA- The 40,000 vacant parcels in Philadelphia cause $3.6 billion in reduced property values, cost more than $20 million per year in city maintenance and nets the city  $70 million less in property taxes, according to a report on the vacant land management system in Philadelphia released this month by the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Philadelphia.
Penn Institute for Urban Research Signs Partnership Agreement With UN-Habitat’s World Urban Campaign

Today, Dr. Eugénie Birch, co-director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research (IUR), signed a partnership agreement with UN-HABITAT, the UN agency that focuses on urban affairs.  The agreement certified the role that the University of Pennsylvania and  Penn IUR will play in the World Urban Campaign, which aims to unite the public and private sectors together with civil society, to elevate sustainable urbanization to the top of the agenda for governments around the world.
