Penn Researchers Tap Into Cell Power to Create Building “Skins” That Adapt to Heat/Light of Environment

PHILADELPHIA –- Engineers, design architects and cell biologists from the University of Pennsylvania will use a National Science Foundation grant to utilize the flexibility and sensitivity of human cells as the models for next-generation building “skins” that will adapt to changes in the environment and increase building energy efficiency.
Former Philadelphia Managing Director Camille Cates Barnett To Become Penn IUR Scholar

Today, Eugenie Birch and Susan Wachter, co-directors of the Penn Institute for Urban Research (Penn IUR) announced that Dr. Camille Cates Barnett, formerly Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia, will become a Penn IUR Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. With support of a William Penn Foundation grant to Penn IUR, Dr. Barnett will research best practices and innovations in urban governance, as well as pen articles on those topics and guest lecture in Penn IUR’s undergraduate urban research colloquium.

Researchers Say Cooperation Is Key to Reducing Greenhouse Gases

  PHILADELPHIA — A study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Delaware shows that cooperation between local and regional governments and organizations is crucial to achieve carbon-reduction goals being negotiated in the Copenhagen Conference of the Parties, or COP15, summit. The findings are presented in a new position paper presented at the summit, “An Urban Agenda for the New Climate,” from Penn’s T.C. Chan Center for Building Simulation and Energy Studies and the University of Delaware Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, or CEEP.

PHILADELPHIA -- Terry Adkins, a University of Pennsylvania School of Design professor, has been awarded the Rome Prize in visual arts.Adkins, an artist and musician, is among 25 awardees who will spend a year studying the arts or humanities at the American Academy in Rome.
Four From University of Pennsylvania Win 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship Awards

PHILADELPHIA – A trio of University of Pennsylvania professors from the School of Arts and Sciences and a senior critic in Penn’s School of Design have been awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded 180 Fellowships to artists, scientists and scholars in the United States and Canada from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants.
