PHILADELPHIA – Students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine are partnering with the national Oral Cancer Foundation to present Philadelphia’s 3rd Annual Oral Cancer Walk on Saturday, April 16.  The event recognizes Oral Cancer Awareness Month, bringing attention to the disease and the importance of early detection. “We are proud that our students have taken the initiative to increase the awareness of oral cancer and its potential risks to our health within the Philadelphia community,” said Denis Kinane, the Morton Amsterdam Dean of Penn Dental Medicine.

PHILADELPHIA –- A collaboration led by a periodontal researcher from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine has found a possible link between the success of gum-disease treatment and the likelihood of giving birth prematurely, according to a study published in the journal BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

PHILADELPHIA  -– The mechanism by which a herpes virus invades cells has remained a mystery to scientists, but now research from Tufts University and the University of Pennsylvania reveals the unusual structure of a key member of the protein complex that allows a herpes virus to invade cells. The new map details an essential piece of the herpes virus “cell-entry machinery,” providing scientists with a new target for antiviral drugs.

PHILADELPHIA – Twelve University of Pennsylvania faculty members have been honored as recipients of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Awards for Distinguished Teaching, Provost’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and Provost’s Awards for Distinguished Ph.D. Teaching and Mentoring. The Lindback Awards, presented to members of Penn’s standing faculty since 1961, recognize distinguished teaching at colleges and universities throughout the Mid-Atlantic service area of Abbotts Dairies Inc.  Christian Lindback was president and principal of Abbott’s Dairies.  
Penn Dental School Alumnus/World War II Commander Gives $17.3 Million In Largest Ever Gift to Penn Dental

PHILADELPHIA – Dr. Louis Schoenleber, Jr. (C’42, D’43), an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, World War II Navy Commander and oral surgeon, has left the majority of proceeds from his multi-million-dollar estate to Penn Dental Medicine’s Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The bequest, totaling $17.3 million, is the largest gift in the School’s history and one of the largest gifts ever to a U.S. dental school.
