Yvonne Mokgoro has been at the forefront of building the new South Africa.  Nelson Mandela appointed her to the 11-member Constitutional Court, established in 1994, to defend the country's constitution and civil liberties. She has written many groundbreaking opinions, including the decision to abolish the death penalty in South Africa.  

Prior to becoming a justice, she had far-reaching influence in her work in human rights, women's rights and the impact of law on society.
