Penn Travel Arts Fest Showcases Study Abroad and Exchange Student Artwork

Penn Abroad and Penn Summer Abroad are co-hosting The Third Annual Travel Arts Festival! March 28through April 8 in the University of Pennsylvania’s LGBT Center at 3907 Spruce St.

This year’s festival features winning photo-contest entries as well as alternative works of art that reflect the global experiences of students in the Penn Abroad and Penn Summer Abroad programs as well as the International Internship Program.  Art by international exchange students at Penn is also on display.

Show organizer Gabriella Nelson says that 16 winners were chosen from a field of more than 100 submissions. Faculty and staff from across the University served as judges.

“The Travel Arts Festival is an umbrella that covers photos and alternative art, video and collages of students living in the moment, immersed in new cultures,” says Nelson, resource coordinator at Penn Abroad/Penn Global.

Students submitted photos in four categories: Off the Beaten Path, Ditching the Desk, Selfies Without Borders and Ready, Set, Go! The latter is a category specifically for exchange students at Penn to show how they’re engaging with American culture.

Sketches, paintings, poems, videos and performance art are included in the Alternative Artwork category.

A reception for photo-contest winners and student artists will be held on Friday, April 1,3-4p.m., in the LGBT Center’s Goodhand Room. The event is free and open to the public.
