Penn Researchers Discover Evidence of Stone Age Wine Predating Earlier Findings

Georgia in the South Caucasus, not Iran, may be the birthplace of wine. In two archaeological sites there, researchers have discovered wine residue in ceramic jars dating back to 6,000 B.C.E., 600-1,000 years earlier than evidence previously found in Iran. The discovery was made by an international team of scientists; a University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology scholar was lead author of the paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
