Penn President Amy Gutmann, Philadelphia Schools CEO Arlene Ackerman to Officiate at Penn Relays' Shuttle Races

WHO:

University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann and incoming School District of Philadelphia CEO Arlene Ackerman will be the guest VIP officials for the elementary school shuttle relays at the Penn Relays.

WHAT:

The shuttle relays are part of the Penn Relays’ annual School Days events, in which fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students from city public schools compete in the infield shuttle relays, a unique event in which each of four team members runs in the opposite direction from the preceding runner. The races are similar to the standard sprint hurdle races for men and women, which will also be run on Friday on the main track. The elementary races are 4x75 yards.

School Days activities are designed to acquaint younger school children with track and field and include inspirational talks by Olympic contenders.

The Penn Relays are one of the largest and most prominent track and field competitions in the country. The 2008 Relays will include Olympic hopefuls from the United States and around the world looking for qualifying times.
