Each year, as Penn students prepare for their final exams, the Department of Physics and Astronomy opens its doors to area high school students.  For many, it will be their first real look at the sort of science experiments that cannot safely be performed in their classrooms.   

The highly visual demonstrations will include static electricity, a Van de Graaff generator, a Jacob's Ladder spark machine, and a number of discharge tubes. The power of magnetism will be shown using everything from antique apparatus to modern high temperature superconductors.

At the one-hour mark of each demonstration (around 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.), Santa Claus will arrive to take part in the show.   Those on the naughty list beware should be advised to wear rubber-soled shoes.
