PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center will be getting new computers thanks to a “refresh” grant from the David Bohnett Foundation.

Penn’s LGBT Center is among 24 locations with David Bohnett CyberCenters that will receive computer upgrades. Technology entrepreneur and philanthropist Bohnett started the CyberCenters in 2004 to provide LGBT communities with a “wired” hub through which members could network, communicate and explore educational, professional and recreational opportunities.

“That we have been designated among the first group to receive upgraded equipment from the Bohnett Foundation recognizes the success of this project and will likely result in an even greater increase of student visits to the LGBT Center,” Bob Schoenberg, Center director, said.

"In today’s increasingly Internet-driven world, the David Bohnett CyberCenters have proven to be a lifeline for people of all ages,” Michael Fleming, Foundation executive director, said. “We are happy to provide regular ‘refresh’ grants enabling groups to keep pace with the many advances in computer hardware and software.”

The first David Bohnett CyberCenter opened its doors in 1998 at the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. The CyberCenter at Penn’s LGBT Center is among 60 nationwide.
