Penn College of General Studies Changes Name to College of Liberal and Professional Studies, Offers New Programs

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania’s College of General Studies has changed its name to the College of Liberal and Professional Studies. It is also redefining and expanding its mission and vision in response to changing global and national trends in higher education.

In addition to its current undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate curricula along with its international and summer programs, LPS will create new programs of study to meet the demands of a knowledge-based economy, emerging professions and new audiences.

The new audiences include students seeking post-baccalaureate study in professional master’s and pre-professional programs that have a foundation in the arts and sciences and also students from around the world.

“LPS students are highly motivated and intellectually outstanding students seeking an Ivy League education to engage their minds, advance their careers and inspire them to make an impact on society,” Kristine Billmyer, the College’s executive director, said.

“LPS’s spirit of programmatic innovation draws on the richness of the arts and sciences and academic resources across Penn. In extending the reach of LPS, we are enhancing the University’s reputation for academic excellence and creative thinking, “ said Rebecca W. Bushnell, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, of which LPS is a part.

Penn’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies allows its full- and part-time students, ranging in age from high school to senior citizens, the means to achieve a world-class education on a schedule that fits their lives.
