New Garden to Be Unveiled at West Philadelphia High School as Part of Urban Nutrition Initiative at Penn

WHAT: A celebration of the opening of the West Philadelphia High School Garden, a program of the Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania’s Netter Center for Community Partnerships

WHO: AUNI students will conduct tours of the new garden, which includes native plants, vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and the Lea Elementary School’s “taco salad bed.” Student chefs will serve a specially prepared light lunch that illustrates the healthy-eating lessons they have learned.
Several students will discuss the following themes they focused on this summer: Eat a Rainbow, Eat Whole Grains and Reading Food Labels.

WHERE: West Philadelphia High School, 47th and Walnut streets

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 5

DETAILS: AUNI builds and maintains school gardens to increase school children’s familiarity with healthy foods and as a link to their science curriculum. Several of the gardens help to increase access to healthy foods through connections with local farmers markets.
