Millar Picked as Penn Lightweights Captain; Shepherd Named Commodore

Rising junior Adam Millar was selected by his teammates to serve as team captain of the University of Pennsylvania lightweights in 2013-14 as announced by head coach Nick Baker on Monday. Rising senior Sam Shepherd was chosen as commodore.

"The team made two great selections in Adam and Sam," said Baker, who enters his fifth year at the helm of the Quakers. "They have all the attributes you want in strong leaders. They are outstanding people as well as excellent athletes. Adam can relate to anyone, and Sam has a tremendous attitude and a big heart. I'm really excited to work with them in the upcoming season."

Millar was a member of the varsity 8 boat throughout his sophomore season. The St. Catharines, Ont., native made the jump from the freshman boat to the varsity and helped the Quakers to the program's first IRA appearance in three years. Throughout most of the 2012-13 campaign and including the IRA Regatta, Millar held the seven seat for the Red and Blue.

"I am definitely honored and excited about the selection," Millar said. "It's a great feeling to have your teammates put their trust in you. I see my role as the vital link between the coaching staff and the rowers, as well as taking on new challenges within the team. I just want to set a great example and be accessible to all of my teammates when they need me."

Shepherd was a member of the third varsity as a sophomore and moved up to the junior varsity boat last season. The Winchester, Mass., native held the three seat for the Quakers throughout the 2012-13 season.

"Shep is always willing to put in the work required, and more," said Millar. "He will make a great commodore because of his approachable personality, and willingness to help younger members of our team find their way."

Last season, the Quakers finished seventh at EARC Sprints to earn their first trip to the IRA Regatta since 2010, and at the national championships, the Quakers won the petite final and finished seventh in the nation.

Millar, Shephard and the Quakers will begin the Fall competition on Oct. 12 with the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River. A complete Fall schedule can be found here.
