Michael X. Delli Carpini’s Term Extended as Dean of Penn’s Annenberg School for Communication

Michael X. Delli Carpini, professor of communication and Walter H. Annenberg Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, has agreed to an extension of his term as dean until June 30, 2018.

The announcement was made today by Penn President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price.

"Michael has been an energetic, wise and widely admired leader since his appointment as dean in 2003,” Gutmann said. “Our recent consultations across the Annenberg School and the University have reaffirmed for us the high esteem in which he is universally held. We are confident that he will continue to strengthen Annenberg’s reputation as the nation’s preeminent school for the study of communication during this three-year extension of his second term.”

“Michael’s outstanding leadership has advanced the Annenberg School across every measure,” Price said. “The faculty has grown in size, diversity and intellectual scope; scholarship and research programs have never been stronger; and the School’s research centers are energetically fostering the integration of knowledge across campus.”

During Delli Carpini’s time as dean, Annenberg’s distinguished and diverse graduate students have consistently emerged as leaders in academic, industry and public sector positions around the world.  For undergraduate students, the School partnered with the College to implement a new communication curriculum that revolutionized course offerings and more deeply involves ASC’s senior faculty in teaching and mentoring undergraduates.

“I am honored by the confidence in my leadership expressed by this extension of my term as dean,” Delli Carpini said. “Serving in this role has been one of the highlights of my academic career, and I look forward to continuing to contribute to both the Annenberg School and Penn over the next four years.”

“A proud Penn alum, Michael’s ambitious vision, collaborative approach and commitment to his School and University have paid extraordinary dividends for more than a decade,” Gutmann said.
