Dedication of Shoemaker Green to Be Sept. 20

WHAT:      

A grand opening ceremony for Shoemaker Green, the University of Pennsylvania’s newest landscape project. It honors emeritus trustee Alvin Shoemaker.

The 2.75-acre green space features a central lawn encircled by walkways, benches and an eating area. Its native plantings and rain garden are just some of its sustainability features.

It also is home to the University’s newly refurbished war memorial.

WHO:        

President Amy Gutmann, Trustees Chair David Cohen and Shoemaker will offer remarks and cut the ribbon.

Shoemaker, a former chairman of First Boston Corporation and chair of the University’s board of trustees from 1986 to 1994, oversaw the Campaign for Penn, which raised $1.4 billion.  He also initiated efforts to purchase the postal lands, now home to Penn Park. A graduate of Penn’s Wharton School, he previously served as an overseer for both Wharton and Athletics. He and his wife also established the Sally & Alvin V. Shoemaker Professorship in Anthropology.  He currently serves on the steering committee for Penn’s $3.5 billion Making History campaign.
