"Vargas Llosa is a superb choice.  Alongside García Márquez, he is probably Latin America's most widely discussed novelist and an important player in the politics of Peru and of the Americas.  Really, one wonders why the Academy took so long to name him as a Laureate.  Even this year, he was seen as a remote outsider.  To me, this unexpected announcement reflects very well on the Swedish Academy and its new permanent secretary, Peter Englund."
