“A full barrel of oil is 42 gallons, yet our government’s energy proposals, from either side of the political aisle, are ‘half full.’ Absent is an energy plan that takes into consideration all of the relevant economic, environmental and social aspects of the problem, with the aim to satisfy human needs for the present and for generations to come. America must recognize that energy is a global issue and our national policy must treat it as such. There are endless historical examples of nations blindly seeking solutions without considering the overall picture. That includes the financial processes that brought about the current fiscal crisis. In these difficult financial times, ‘it’s the economy, stupid’ rules, but it is better replaced by ‘it’s the sustainability, stupid,’ which already includes the economy and is vitally important for the long term.
